80th FD Chair: JLA, NTC Treasurer

Jose Lino Arguelles, Treasurer of the National Teachers College since 1962 is the appointed Chair of the 80th Founding anniversary of the school.

A Bachelor of Science in Management graduate of De La Salle in 1939, he has held important positions in different companies before and even while with NTC.

Immediately after graduation he worked with IBM, and was promoted Vice President and Gen. Manager in 1951. He holds the track record of being its manager for 15 years, the longest ever held by a Filipino in this American company, where he stayed for 26 years. Here his business interests grew in the company of big names in our country’s industry in the likes of Ramon Cojuangco, Ramon del Rosario, Jobo Fernandez, Carlos Palanca Jr., Benigno Toda, to name a few.

He is the Treasurer of the Family Clinic and Hospital, Inc. since 1951 up to the present. His astute handling of the company finances impressed the clan’s matriarch Dr. Flora Ylagan, his mother-in-law and one of the founders of the National Teachers College, who offered him to join NTC, to hold its bursar.

JLA is still active either as executive or director in the following companies: Philippine Koyo Bearing Co., Invest Planning Corp of the Phil. and Information Professionals, Inc.

JLA’s financial stewardship has led NTC to acquire two prime lots in Manila in cold cash, sans bank loans, the first one in 1963 when it bought and had three buildings constructed in the area bounded by the driveway on the second gate straight through the canteen. And just this year, NTC bought the site of the defunct Phil Bank, which faces, DSWD, along Legarda, corner San Rafael St., a stone’s throw from San Sebastian Basilica.

Though he doesn’t fuss about his affinity with our National Hero, his grandmother being Soledad the youngest sister of Dr. Jose Rizal, his ingrained Chino-Hispanic character exudes with integrity, dignity and “delicadeza”.

Among his many blessings, he considers his marriage to Priscilla Ylagan the most glorious of all. She has kept her glamour and vivacity that makes her look younger than

her age. This might be the secret why JLA now at ninety years old, married to the same woman for sixty three years has remained sharp and fit. Their two sons, Carlos Ignacio and Oscar Jose, both successful professionals, are among the many bonuses in life, JLA is very grateful for.

As the 80th FD Chair, he wishes a continued service of excellence to all students that enter the portals of NTC. He feels it a nationalistic duty to give the Filipino youth equal privilege to be educated. “Selectivity is discriminatory and unfair. The transformations of students are in the hands of the mentors and this is where Service Excellence can be demonstrated,” he admonishes the faculty.
